Te Anau is a small lakeside town of around 3,000 residents on the shores of Lake Te Anau — South Island's largest lake — bordering Fiordland National Park. It serves as the main gateway to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and multiple Great Walks, swelling to 10,000 visitors in summer.
