El Alto

El Alto sits on the altiplano rim at roughly 4,000-4,150 metres, directly above La Paz, which lies in the canyon below. Once a satellite settlement, it is now one of Bolivia's largest cities and its most emphatically indigenous - overwhelmingly Aymara, young, entrepreneurial and self-built.
